Sustainability
Shelton Turnbull has been a quiet leader in environmental responsibility for decades. We have consistently strived to provide a green environment internally, while supporting efforts to respect the environment outside our production facility and within the surrounding community. It might seem unlikely, even improbable, for a production facility using tons of paper, gallons of solvents, and thousands of pounds of metal, to be a leader in the support of environmental ethics. We are continually examining our processes and procedures to maintain that quiet leadership role.

Green Procurement
The paper industry has historically been challenged to minimize its footprint on the environment. Shelton Turnbull is active in supporting these challenges by:
- We offer recycled papers including envelopes with biodegradable window panels. These products are offered in varying percentages of post consumer recycled content.
- 100% of the carbonless papers that we use for multi-part forms contain NatureSolv capsules. These organically-based capsules were developed using renewable resources.
Our production materials, other than paper, are also purchased with sustainability in mind:
- We use printing inks in all of our offset printing presses manufactured with soy, vegetable or other renewable components.
- Alcohol based printing fountain solutions have been replaced with water-based products.
Plant Operations
Recycling... after we have reduced the quantity needed and reused whatever we can, we then emphasize our recycling activities:
- 600,000 pounds of paper annually
- 5,000 pounds of aluminum printing plates annually
- 55 gallons of waste oil is converted into usable fuels annually
- Our aggressive recycling campaign handles office waste paper while recycling glass, cans and plastic bottles
Wetlands.... Adjacent to our property is a protected wetlands area which is a living source of wildlife including deer, pheasant, ducks and geese. Shelton Turnbull and the wildlife have been great coexisting neighbors for over 20 years.
- Created a wetlands holding pond which was seeded with $300 per pound hand-picked grass seed that replicates the natural wetland surroundings
- Incorporated environmentally friendly storm runoff procedures
Utilities.... As the result of conservation techniques and environmentally friendly upgrades, we have reduced our energy consumption by 50% from 1998 to 2009!
- Written procedures to conserve energy
- Installation of energy efficient lighting throughout our 68,000 sq ft facility
- Replacement of low efficient with high efficient motors in our production equipment
- Regular energy efficiency audits with local utilities
